[youtube id=”STH48RvMwT0″ width=”620″ height=”360″]

Kilian Martin – proclaimed to be the next “Best Skateboarder in the World” has recently introduced his new Pro-model Deck from Powell Peralta. Kilian is an extremely unique skateboarder who focuses mainly on Freestyle, but following the footsteps of Rodney Mullen, he blends his Freestyle Skateboarding into Street Skating and literally annihilates everything in sight. Here’s a video where Kilian discusses how he got into skateboarding, what his biggest influences are, and how he would be lost without the world he lives in right now. Check out the video, and then click the link below to enter a contest where you could win a signature model of his new deck.

Halloween at Leeside 2012

It’s that time of year again when Halloween is creeping up on us fast and that means Leeside Session with all the craziest rippers in outfits that make it almost impossible to tell who’s who until they start doing tricks. Leeside is  definitely the most hardcore skate park in Canada. Completely man-made and every obstacle is built to kick your ass if your not skilled enough to ride it. The Leeside Halloween Jam is always the best event because everyone dresses up and it just adds to the presence of the Tunnel. It starts at dusk, rain or shine, so be there with your costumes on. The hard part though is trying to make your tricks with fireworks deafening your ears and people shooting bottle rockets at you. But that’s part of the Jam.

If you can’t take the heat – stay the fuck out!!

Here’s a video of last year’s event so you can get a taste in your mouth of what’s to come this time around….

Final Jam at Guildford Bowl

Guildford-Bowl

Guildford-Bowl

As far as I’ve been told, the construction of the Olympic sized Lap Pool at the Guildford Recreation Centre begins the first week of October which means we only have 1 week left to skate the Guildford Bowl so get out there and make use of the short time that remains. The Bowl has to be removed because the corner of this new Lap Pool building is going to land right in the centre of the Bowl. The rest of the Park with all the Street Obstacles will still be open, but the construction fence surrounding the Bowl will go up soon and the destruction of the Bowl will follow shortly. It’s a real shame but there’s not much we can do about it. At some point when the construction is complete, they will be building something else in the remaining area where the Bowl was. It’s only going to be about half the square footage of the original Bowl. I’m liking the idea of a sick concrete mini ramp with lots of features and extensions. Something unique that we don’t have everywhere else. Any suggestions for what you want to see constructed there send them my way and I’ll pass them on to the City of Surrey’s Planning Department.

So for the sake of the few people that actually called Guildford Skate Park their Home Park at any point in their lives, let’s hook up for one more solid film session and make some memories

Surrey YouthFest 2012

Youth-Fest-Poster

Youth-Fest-Poster

Every year the City of Surrey celebrates the next generation of young adults with Youth Fest at the Guildford Recreation Centre. Lots of exiting stuff will be happening from 4-10pm this Saturday, September 22nd, including Band performances, indoor and outdoor games, the Teen Dance, Breakdance Competitions, Ryan Brynelson Freestyle Demos, and of course the Skateboard vs. BMX Demo in the Bowl – hosted by myself Hippie Mike and featuring Andy Anderson and James Van de Kamp. This will be the final event at Guildford Bowl as it will be shut down and demolished in October due to the beginning of the construction for the new Lap Pool being built on to the Rec Centre. The street section will remain open and untouched but the bowl has to be removed and eventually will be replaced with some new features in the future…

Join us for the Demo at 5pm.

And go to the Surrey Website for all the details

9/11 Countdown – Last Day for Voting

The Show Up Mike Contest is finally coming to a close. You had all summer to present the world with your 5 trick videos at any of the 49 local parks in this insane land of skateboarding that we call home. Fighter took the lead early with his Chuck Bailey submission, but ran out of friends too fast. Ryan Brynelson crushed the competition with over 120 votes the first day his video went up and raised the bar even higher sitting on top for close to a month. The only person man enough to take him off the podium was Sean Lowe and after quite a back and forth battle is still living the high life with over 300 votes. Today, September 11th 2012, is the day that decides everything. Will Sean hold on for the $500 or do some of these guys have reserves hiding somewhere just waiting to vote at 11:30pm or something. Who knows?

You have until midnight tonight to vote…

The winner will be announced at Hippie Mike’s Tour de Surrey 2012’s Grand Finale this Saturday September 15th at approximately 4:00pm.

(All 18 runner’s up will be receiving a Custom Show Up Mike T-Shirt for participating)

Bowl Battles – Yes!!

Don’t forget that this Saturday is Battle at Hastings #3. Presented by Vans, Bones, Thunder, Thrasher Mag, Alien Workshop, 187, Real, Fourstar, Brixton, BLVD and Kevin Kelly, lots of cash to be won. It’ll be a sick event with some of the gnarliest Bowl Skaters Vancouver area has to offer. We’ll be entering Andy Anderson and Stu Benoit to represent for Protest Skateboards, they both know that bowl very well.

There’s gonna be a ton of rippers there. Pro or Am doesn’t matter, it’s a battle.

The big question is – who will beat Hopkins??

Kitsch Demo Reminder

[vimeo id=”47962887″ width=”620″ height=”360″]

Just a quick shout out to Geoff Dermer and the boys – don’t forget to show up at Chuck Bailey Skate Park tonight for the Freaks and Geeks Demo to pay your respects.

I’ll be there hosting the event, we’ll be having a BBQ around 6pm followed by a Demo from the Kitsch Team, a Best Trick Contest and a showing of the Bric-a-Brac Video on the Urban Screen (The outside wall of the building).

The Kitsch guys cover all grounds and rip shit up, with style. They’re a local skateboard company out of Vancouver consisting of Mike Hastie, Cory Wilson, Stacy Gabriel, Will Blakley, Sean Macalister and the man Geoff Dermer. Dermer was actually the first skater I met when we moved out to British Columbia from Ontario back in 1998. We hooked up with a friend of a friend who’s roommate was dating Geoff and we all hung out. I never thought at that moment that I would be hosting a Demo for his skateboard company at a skate park I get paid to organize and run events at with a skate shop that I’m sponsored by (Coastal Riders) 14 years later. Now that’s a tight knit family…

Check the video from last week’s stop at Walnut Grove

See ya tonight
