Creature Video

Well, unfortunately I didn’t make my way into Downtown Vancouver for the CFSU Creature Video Premiere but I know lots of people did. Creature is a good old fashioned skate company who’s skaters like to hit transition so I’m sure it was a great video.

From the few people I’ve talked to it sounds like everyone had a blast and enjoyed the night. I’m sure there was tons of drinks being spilled and sloshed all over the Rickshaw.

Graeme Betts is still stunned by a Fakie Nosegrab Invert to Fakie and Dennis Regan said that Ryan Reyes and David Gravette provided the top parts. No surprise there…

Here’s a funny Credits video put out with Willis Kimbel singing

and here’s David Gravette’s insane Bonus Footage

Humbleness Goes a Long Way

Vans Canada just recently welcomed Vancouver’s Russ Milligan to their team of rippers and it was awesome when I read what Vans Canada Team Manager Alex Forbes wrote about it –

“He’s been holding it down for a long time, he’s not only an amazing skater, but his humble attitude and personality fit perfectly with our brand and the rest of the team.”

That statement said a lot, and it gives respect to Russ as an individual, but also to Alex and the way he wants to see Vans Canada represented. I have a good relationship with Alex and he says a lot of the same things to me whenever we are talking on the phone or by email. He is always appreciative of all that I create and do for the world of skateboarding in the province of British Columbia, and he expresses these feelings constantly. It’s not just about being the best skateboarder any more, it’s about being a solid role model for skateboarding itself.

In the 1980’s and 90’s it was about being hardcore, and some teams today are still all about that. Look at Emerica, Baker, Shake Junt and Krew, these guys just wanna party, and they want the world to know it. It makes the younger generation a little jealous to see kids get hooked up with a team where they can live in a mansion and party like Axl Rose or Billy Idol all day long, as long as they get some tricks on film they’re good. But how far is that going to lead you, and how accepted will you still be as the world evolves around you? Let’s look back at the 80’s – The Bones Brigade was probably the biggest Skateboard Team in the history of skateboarding, Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Tommy Guerrero and Mike McGill, plus add in Rodney Mullen and Kevin Harris representin’ the freestyle world. You most likely have still to this day never seen any footage of these guys partying, and that doesn’t mean they never partied, some of them did I’m sure, but they kept it behind the scenes. They were making big money and weren’t flaunting it. And still to the day you hear all of these names in the industry in positive ways.

Now you look at Christian Hosoi and Duane Peters, and even Natas Kaupus. These guys were just as big a part of helping skateboarding evolve through that era, but where are they now? The guys that used that hardcore image to get more likes, maybe weren’t liked for as long, or by as many. And these 3 are all legends to any skateboarder from those times, but they just weren’t humble enough to utilize all of their skills. In the 90’s it was still about being hardcore, except now people were bringing it to the streets. Skaters were fighting security guards and spitting in people’s faces. Mohawks and dyed hair took over and the image of skateboarding was on the edge of acceptance and could go either way. If it wasn’t for those humble guys continuing to be the representatives in the public eye we might have lost all respect from society and would not have all the luxuries we are spoiled with now.

So think about this as you are growing up and plan your “dream future” of becoming a big name Pro Skater and ask yourself what the companies are looking for in their riders. Russ Milligan got on to Vans for more than one reason, he’s an amazing and consistent skateboarder with a huge array of tricks and mad switch pop, but his attitude had to fit with the image of the Team that the Team Manager is expecting from them. And if it didn’t, they wouldn’t have chose him. Times are changing, I say it all the time, so chill out a bit and instead of doing it all for you all the time, do it for skateboarding as a whole. Maybe it’ll get you somewhere…

And that’s from someone who was all about being hardcore and loved to party growing up but made some big changes in life to become accepted by society and be able to share his skills and devotion with the rest of the industry to help build us up to where we are today.

Now check out Russ Milligan killin’ it in the streets – humbly

Kilian Martin – Artistic Maniac

Another amazing and unique video montage of Kilian Martin created by Brett Novak. Named “Internal Departure”, it looks like it was filmed in some art gallery somewhere. Either way, it another chance for you to boggle your brain trying to figure out half the tricks that Kilian lays down. Primo Slide to Crooked Grind… what?

It awesome because there isn’t much comparison for Kilian Martin’s skateboarding style other than Rodney Mullen, but even at that, they are very different. Rodney Mullen invented tricks that changed the world of skateboarding forever and helped it to progress to the point it’s at today. Kilian lives in the generation of today where boards have not changed for almost 2 decades and the population of skateboarders around the world are fixed in their ways. The only other younger skateboarder I can think to relate to Kilian is William Spencer. Not that they do any of the same tricks, but they relate by being inventors. Maybe we could have a battle video between them one day like the old Rodney Mullen vs. Daewon Song (A-Team vs. World Industries) videos…

Watch this new video of Kilian and be amazed by his talent once again, and if you’re interested in seeing him skate live, make sure you show up to The World Round-Up Freestyle Championships this May 17-20 at The Cloverdale Rodeo.

Little Long-Hair LeTourneau – Ain’t so Little no More

In the 8 1/2 years I worked at The Cloverdale Youth Centre, I got to know a lot of kids and William LeTourneau was always one of my favourites. I remember him when he first started skateboarding, super long hair, and just loved to flow. He looked up to Mitch Salter back then and they were two of the few that would actually venture into the nasty assed death bowl at the Cloverdale Skate Park with speed and air that peninsula. Back then William could cruise that park and was just hittin’ up early grabs and coping grinds all over the place, but as he got older, and trimmed that hair so it was only hangin’ down to ears, he fell into the traps of those ledge skating locals proving himself to be an all around shredder. I think that skaters who learn in tranny first and then pick up the street tricks seem to have a better sense of commitment on their boards. They’re used to stayin’ on, grindin’ long, and goin’ big. Look at Andy Anderson – perfect example.

William LeTourneau has been ripping for many years now and has won his share of prizes in the past as well. I was there when he started, I was there when he quit and started again, I was there when he had long hair, I was there when he chopped it, and I’m still there – lovin’ to see another natural skateboarder grow up strong.

Keep it up buddy!! Can’t wait to see what’s next…

Kilian Martin – Interests in our Industry

Industry & Interest Magazine did a recent interview with the world’s most popular skateboarder right now – Kilian Martin. Kilian if you don’t know, is the next leader in Freestyle Street Skating. Pro for Powell Peralta he is definitely ready to represent at any given moment, and the tricks he throws down are mind-blowing taking freestyle tricks to the street obstacles – Rodney Mullen style. Kilian has been getting a ton of publicity this past year through montage videos filmed and edited by Brett Novak, but this is a great interview to get to know the boy behind the man.

Tyler the Creator

Ty Williamson is a mere 18 years old and is starting his venture into the world of videography. He spent the past year filming some of the best skaters around Poco, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and has released quite a few short films. Ty still has a long way to go before being one of the most well known skateboard filmers in BC but he is definitely on the right path. He got solid equipment and knows how to edit, plus he has a very reputable status with tons of sick riders and he’s ready to dedicate his life to it. Of course filming for One Love Skateboard Shop doesn’t hurt either…

Remember this is how Jordan Mayfield, David Wayne Stevens and  Benny Stoddard all began.

Check out some of Ty’s work below:

Blinded by Bravery

What is the definition of brave?

brave

[breyv]

adjective

possessing or exhibiting courage or courageous endurance.

Making a fine appearance.

Archaic . Excellent; fine; admirable.

noun

a brave person.

A warrior

This kid is amazing, and may be the most hardcore person to ride a skateboard. We’ve seen many interesting cases of physically challenged people take up skateboarding over the past few decades and actually become famous from it – Pancho Moler, Jon Comer, Og de Souza. All of these guys changed the way we looked at skateboarding by competing with the best of the best at it. To me it’s an amazing feeling to think of what goes through the minds of someone who can’t walk, yet decides they want to skateboard, and hit 12 stair rails….

There’s a new young hero to add to this unique list of people who will blow your mind. His name is Tommy Carroll and he is a major inspiration to many. Blinded at the age of 2 by cancer in his retinas, Tommy has lived his life in the dark so to say, but has brought his ambitions to the light. This kid goes out there and skateboards by the powers inside him, with absolutely no vision. He can drop in, grind, air and carve with no fear, using only his other senses to know where he is. What I want to know is how did this even begin? Who decided to let Tommy learn to skateboard? And how did he get to the point of confidence he is at right now?

I’ve taught many people how to skateboard and I can definitely see the benefit of taking someone who cannot see and getting them on a board rolling around and just learning those balance skills and repetitive motions. But skateboarding has an addiction attached to it, the addiction of learning. Once you begin to experience new obstacles, and tricks, you want more. So Tommy learned how to shred a bowl, and I only see him getting even better as time goes on.

This video is inspirational in so many ways, it makes you think about trying to drop in with your eyes closed. I’ve done it, and it’s terrifying. It makes you wonder what drives his motivation. And it proves once again that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and commit.

Watch this video with respect, and try and put yourself in his shoes. Would you be this brave?

My favourite part is when the lights go out at the skate park – and it doesn’t matter. Go Tommy!!

Dazed… but not confused

Sometimes people spend their entire life searching for answers about who they are and what they should be. And sometimes there are those rare cases where life just comes together and happens on it’s own. You have to find yourself eventually, but are there “Yellow Brick Roads” out there to hunt down, or do you just wait in one spot for a sign? Who knows how it happens but it does, and one day you realize who you are.

This young teenager has definitely found himself this past year. Pumping out video montage after montage, and focusing on local talents that others might not recognize, Ethan Craig has proven himself to be an amazing skateboard filmer and video maker. His filming is creative, and captures what matters, but his editing is just becoming phenomenal. At a mere 16 years old, Ethan has already made a name for himself in a community of thousands of skaters. And one thing I really like about him is that he can kill it on the board too. Sometimes you get guys that go out and purchase the best of the best for video equipment and just start hanging out at the skate parks. This can be their ticket to chillin’ with the Big Guns, but that doesn’t make them a filmer. Just because you film the best dude out there, doesn’t mean for a second that the video’s gonna be any good. You need to have talent when you film, you need to have visions prior to filming, and you need to be dedicated to making videos that people enjoy watching. And Ethan has all of these assets.

I remember Ethan from when he was younger and used to hang with Jeff Cole and he was always determined. He had talents, he had confidence, and he had visions. It’s awesome to see this young kid bring these visions to reality, and find himself. After a summer of releasing a bunch of unique Hi8 videos of multiple rippers, Ethan Craig has announced that he is now filming for his first Full Length Skate Video –“Daze” – which will be premiered near the end of 2013. Can’t wait to see it buddy.

Here’s the first trailer to get you hyped

Extreme Sports Hippie Mike Skateboarding Video Reviews

A Cold Summer Day at Chuck Bailey

Last Friday Dave Stevens came out to Chuck Bailey Skate Park to do a little of what he does best – film and edit a montage with some of the locals. Francois LeBlanc, Calvin Dignard, Jordan Zazula, Magnus Hansen, Hippie Mike and Kory Laan all represent in style utilizing the majority of the skate park. The day was gorgeous and you would actually believe it was the middle of summer if everyone wasn’t decked out in toques and winter jackets. It was actually -2 degrees out there, which in this neighbourhood is extremely cold and definitely takes away your desire to really go for stuff. But shit went down, like always. Kory Laan even shut the session down with a couple banger bigspins over the big gap.

M-I-C-K-Y P-A-P-eh?

M-I-C-K-Y    P-A-P-eh?

Micky Papa, what can you say? A natural born skateboarder. Glad he’s Canadian so he can represent us all in the next decade of destruction that he’s about to throw down.

I remember Micky from back when the RDS Indoor Skate Park was open in the early 2000’s and even back then at a very young age, he was throwing down. I actually have footage somewhere of him shifty kickflipping Secret 10 when he was like 12-13 years old and you’re guaranteed it was butter. And ever since Poco’s Railside Park opened up Micky has been the legend there. And what about the Varial Heelflip over Black Ice??

Micky’s had a solid year placing in Top Positions at some high end contests across North America, which is not easy to do in this day and age. He invested some of his winnings in opening a One Love Skate Shop in Maple Ridge with Dan Pageau and success is starting to hunt him down. Looks to me like Micky Papa might be the next Canadian Icon of Skateboarding.

This Friday – 1-11-13Thrasher Magazine will drop a big video part of Micky Papa

Here’s a small taste of what’s to come

[youtube id=”JG6ILzQZ1yY” width=”620″ height=”360″]

Each day this week Thrasher will release something new featuring Micky Papa so tune in and when Friday hits, chaos strikes…
