Surrey Youth Week Jam 2013

The Winners

It was definitely a day to shine, the sun sure was…

Hippie Mike hosted Surrey’s 9th annual Youth Week Skate Jam, this one was at Chuck Bailey Skate Park, and it incorporated a BMX contest into it as well. The Surrey Fire Fighters donated some funds for food towards a free BBQ and members even showed up and cooked and served the hot dogs for  over 2 hours. There was a ton of people who came out to participate in the event and also just to watch.

The BMX Contest ran as a Jam for about 40 minutes in between the qualifying runs and Finals for the skateboarding and most people were patient enough during that time, but the real deal was the skate comp. 4 Categories – 9 & under, 10-13, 14-18 and 19 & over, and all 4 of them were stacked. The 9 & unders all ripped as hard as they could, with Emmanuel N. Busting an ollie down the 3 block at 8 years old, and 7 year old Django Caseley putting on a knee boarding demo. The 10-13 yr old category was intense. JR Barron, Mathew McCauley and Adam Lewis all destroyed it – ledges, rails and tech tricks over every gap there. The 14-18’s was dominated by Fighter (Brad Muscat) and The Dominator himself – Dominic Devries. Gabe Dinorscio was there but had to leave before the finals, it would’ve been nice to see how he would have fit into the winner’s circle if he had been able to stick around. And then there was the 19 & over category. Francois LeBlanc was on his ledge game for sure, but so were Yuya Ishikawa and Calvin Dignard. Allen Handley and Eve Feaver also made finals for killin the tranny, but Nothing was stopping Calvin form winning that one.

So many tricks were stomped so solid in every category it was mind-blowing. If you missed it, you really missed out. But here are the results and some photos so you can at least pretend you were there…

Results:

9 & under – 1. Django Caseley; 2. Emmanuel N.; 3. Aiden Eastman; 4. Emmanuel G.; 5. Tienna Rivard

10-13 – 1. Mathew McCauley; 2. JR Barron; 3. Adam Lewis; 4. Theo Caseley; 5. Mark Melyukov; 6. Ethan Clark; 7. Josh Lewis; 8. Austin Bolm & Jacob Gilbert; 9. Jean-Claude N.; 10. Fish & Bachouch Michael; 11. Jayden ; 12. Damon Morgan & Dylan Reinheimer; 13. Matt Kipp; 14. Matthew Lalim

14-18 – 1. Dominic Devries; 2. Brad Muscat; 3. Jacob Drescher; 4. Tanner Hawthorne; 5. Noah Eastwood; 6. Henry McQuaid; 7. Gabe Dinorscio; 8. Riley Allen-Clerihue; 9. Spring Break BBQ 2013

March 15th, 2013 started off Spring Break with a bang or two for the kids at Chuck Bailey Skate Park where Hippie Mike and the CBYPC organized and held a little Bike/Skate Jam in the Bowl along with a free BBQ.

Everyone was invited and lots showed up. There were some Best Trick Comps for the different age groups and Mike handed out a bunch of prizes, but mostly it was just about hanging out together with some tunes blastin’ and having a good time. Amazing job once again for the City of Surrey building a Skate Park with a covered section, proving the opportunity for another successful event that ran while the rain was pouring down. It’s a luxury to have.

Thanks to all the sponsors that supported – Protest Skateboards, Ollie North, Coastal Riders, Street Dreamz, AXS Gear, Bike Zone, Fiend, Ten Pack, Almond, Norco, RDS, Fallen and Safeway.

And thanks to all who came out to skate, it was great fun.

Adam Hopkins and Max Bayko shredded the deep end along with Allen Handley, Andy Anderson and Grant while the young bucks all shredded in the mini ramps. JR Barron and Riley threw down lots of tech tricks and Theo and Django Caseley impressed the crowd with their tranny skills. Especially Django at 6 years old dropping in on his knees and grinding coping in the 7 foot – Crazy!

Best Trick in the Deep was pretty tight. Hopkins was obviously killing it but didn’t want to win of course, so it was pretty much between Max, Allen and Grant. Max was hitting every tough transfer in the place, but it was riding between Allen Handley’s Melon Grab Feeble Grind Fakie and a sick handplant by Grant for 1st place. Then at the last moment and final attempts, Max Bayko busted out a clean Nocomply Tailslide across the big wall. He shut it down and took home a sweet Protest Deck and Tshirt. Everyone that showed up got some sort of prize, ate too many hot dogs, and most of them left in a new Protest Skateboards Tshirt. That’s how we do it…

Here’s a couple photos of the older dudes having fun on the big wall

Protest Online Best Trick Contest Winner Is…

Protest Best Trick Prize Pack - Dec 2012

It was a great contest and I’d say majority of the tricks entered were definitely sick tricks. Some were big, some were tech, some were just weird, but all were awesome. You, the public, narrowed down the Top 10 by voting for your favourites, and then it was Team Protests turn to decide the winner. We narrowed it down to the Top 3 with Allen Handley’s Miller Flip over the fireplace at Chuck Bailey, Brendan Nielsen’s Smithgrind Hardflip on the ledge at White Rock Res, and Lanny DeBoer’s Frontside Kickflip 360 over a big wedge gap in the streets. All 3 of these tricks were super unique in their own ways but we were forced to choose just one. After lots of debate back and forth and asking the opinion of a couple outside sources it was confirmed…

Congratulations to Brendan Nielsen!!

The winner of the 2012 Online Protest Best Trick Contest!!

Brendan has won a huge Prize Pack containing:

A Protest – Hippie Mike Deck, an Old School Shaped Protest Team Deck, 2 Protest T-Shirts, a Trucker Style Protest Skateboards Hat, and a Custom Protest Skateboards Hoody.
